Mother’s Day Card using Close to My Heart Art Philosophy Cartridge

I've been spending time working with my new Cricut Explore.  I have to say it is a great machine, at least compared to the E2.  I loved my E2, but it definitely had some limitations.  Here is my first real project I created and cut with my new machine.

I made this pretty card for Mother’s Day.  I made a square card for a change, that measures 4.75 x 4.75.  It fits perfectly in a 5” square envelope.

I used the Ivy Lane Paper Packet from Close to My Heart (CTMH).  This paper is so pretty and I thought it would be perfect for a Mother’s Day card.

Here are the products I used, you an get them here.

Ivy Lane Paper Packet
Art Philosophy Cartridge
Artiste Cartridge
Exclusive Ink in Hollycock
Finger nail file for sanding

I cut the first (bottom) layer at 4.5” square.  The flourish design is from the Philosophy cartridge, cut at 4”.  It is found on page 67 of instruction booklet, in CCR it is on the Font Layer (shift) tab.  In Design Space (DS) use Image number M44082.  You can’t search on the image number, try searching on Flourish, since that is the name they gave this image in DS.

The scalloped square is a slider image from the Philosophy Cartridge also.  DS #44D78, CCR Tag layer and on page 33 of booklet.  This square is 2.6”, I used the hide contour feature to remove the slider slits from the image.  You can cut this from a Spellbinder die also. I shaded around the edges with Hollycock ink.  I used a triangle makeup sponge to do this since I don’t have any daubers.

The purple square is 2.25”.  I embossed it with a Damask embossing folder and sanded it to give it an antique look.

The butterflies are from the Artiste cartridge, page 58 Tab Accent 4 (shift).  There is also a butterfly on the Philosophy cartridge that will work just as well.  It is cut at 1.1”.  I used the Hide contour feature to make a solid image.  I found making the image about 4” than removing all the little pieces was easier than doing it at the 1.1”.  I just sized it after  I placed the butterflies on the card with a tiny little foam dots, so they wouldn't be flat.  I used the Epoxy bubbles for the embellishments.

I am really enjoying the design phase a little more with Design Space.  There is still a little difficulty looking for images, but I am learning my way around.  I still think they could make this a little more user friendly.

Till next time>

Design Space - Customizing the size of your card canvas

Hi Everyone,

I have been designing my cards in Design Space (DS)and LOVE LOVE LOVE! the idea of laying out my project on a canvas.  I have been designing cards for Mother's Day and have discovered a problem in the software.  I wanted a horizontal rectangle card that measure 6 x 5.5.  I noticed when I chose my card to be horizontal I could no longer change the dimensions of the card.  It worked fine when the card was in portrait mode, but not horizontal.  I wanted to pass this problem on to anyone who may have come across the same problem.

You can make any changes to the canvas, except customizing the size.  After selecting "Custom", you then click on the lock to unlock the sizes, but at this point the custom reverts back to the default card size and the lock won't open. It just sort of freezes there, like it is doing something, but it never does.

I contacted Provo Craft's Customer Service, to be sure it wasn't my computer or operating system.   They tried making the changes on their computers and had the same problem.  So the problem is being reported to the software department.   I have to say they were very helpful and friendly.  I have always had good experiences dealing with Cricut's customer service.

If you really need a card canvas, which I think really helps, they suggested using a card image from one of your cartridges.  If you don't have any card images just use a rectangle shape instead.  I have used this in CCR in the past so I could figure out what size to cut my images.

While I had them on the phone I asked if it was possible to darken the grid lines.  I use the grid lines to attach and weld images together.  They said they would provide my suggestion to the software department.  If you would like to see the grid lines darker, please pass it on to customer service.  The more of us that ask for it, the more likely it will be done.

I will be sharing my projects with you soon.  I am about ready to cut them out.  I am trying out some cuts I would never have attempted on my E2.

If you want access to the Close to My Heart cartridges, please be sure to get them here.  You must own the cartidge to use it in Design Space.

So until then.

St Patricks Day Cards with Close to My Heart

Happy St Patty's Day!!

It's almost St Patrick's Day and even though I am not Irish, I have some friends who are.  They love sending cards, so I thought I would make these cards for them.

Both cards measure 4.25  x 5.5, I used some pre-cut cards leftover from a Close to my Heart Card Making Kit I had.

Here are the products I used.

Skylark Paper Pack
CTMH card stock - Pear
Exclusive Inks  in Pear
Laughing Lola Card Making Kit Stamp Set
CTMH Stamp Set - In the Background Flair
CTMH Embossing Folder, Chevron
Durable Triangle Studs
Clear Glitter Gems
Green ribbon - Hobby Lobby
1/2" heart punch for Shamrocks

All of the above products can be purchase at I won't go into details on making these cards, they are very simple.  The Happy St Patrick's Day sentiment was typed on card stock using my printer.  I create my files in Adobe Photoshop elements so I can move words around where I want them.  I cut card stock down to 4x6 inch pieces and run it through the photo tray.

I am waiting from my Cricut Explore Machine to arrive, can't wait.  It is on its way.  I have been playing with Design Space to get past the learning curve.  It is definitely different than CCR.  My internet connection isn't the greatest, so it isn't as fast as I would like.

I have had a few issues with my linked cartridges,  not showing up as purchased. I found if you logged out and logged back in they would show up.  Not sure why, but the problem seemed to correct itself.

I also, find the search feature a little tedious,  I am sure it is a matter of getting used to it.  I would definitely love to see my cartridge list to know what cartridges have been linked.  Of course, I don't have a machine yet, so that may be the problem.  I will let you know on that.

Unless you are willing to purchase a monthly subscription, it will still be cheaper to purchase cartridges that you find on sale.  I definitely use more than 20 images on some of my cartridges, like Create A Critter.  So purchasing a cartridge for $19.99 is still a great deal,  keep an eye out for JoAnn's sale, I find they offer the best prices.

You will still need to own the Close to My Heart cartridges to use any of the images in Design Space.  They will not be for sale individually.   This goes for Disney cartridges too.

So if you are interested in the Close to My Heart images, you can purchase them at my website.  Just click on my link.  If you have been looking at Studio J, now is the time to try it out.  During the month of March you can order Studio J layouts for only $5 each.
