Close to My Heart Brushed - Birthday Cards

Now that Spring has arrived it's all about those pretty colors, pinks, greens, yellows, they all shout Spring and flowers.

I created two birthday cards using the palette from Close to My Heart's paper pack Brushed.  This pallet just screams spring time.  Unfortunately my camera just doesn't do it justice.  These colors are vibrant and rich.

All of the colors used are available in the the Brushed Paper pack.  I used the same colors of ink stamp pads for shading my images too.

If you are ready to start creating with these beautiful spring colors, pick up your Brushed Paper Pack today.  It would be perfect for those Easter and Mother's Day cards.  You can also get coordinating embellishments and of course inks.

Filigree Bow with Cricut Explore

I have been seeing filigree bows on Pinterest, but the dies are on the pricey side.  So I took the time to design one myself.  As you can see in the picture below, it came out nice.  It isn't perfect like a die, but I think it works just fine.

I cut this bow at about 3" wide, to see how small it could be cut.  It definitely needs to be cut on the intricate cut setting, with a new blade and sticky mat for this size.  It cuts even better at larger sizes,.

GET YOUR COPY OF MY FILE FREE.  If you have a machine that can cut SVG's created in Inkscape please see below,  I am sharing this file with all my customers.

I designed this card based on March's sketch challenge from Mojo Monday.  They have some really clean designs that work well with all types of cards.  This is my take on Mojo Monday MOJO390.

I used Close to My Heart papers in Blush and Pear.  The ink is also in the same colors.  The printed paper I created myself with one of Anna Griffith's embossing folders.  I saw this technique on YouTube.  You just ink up the negative side of the folder for the background and then take another ink pad and lightly rub over the raised side after it is bossed to add color.  This allows you to create your own patterns in colors you want.

Happy Couple Card with Close to My Heart

Here is a great card to make for that wedding or anniversary you have coming up.  You could even make this a birthday card if you wanted.  I found a this card on Pinterest an just loved it.  I thought I would share it and provide a little instructions oh how I made it.

I started with this stamp set from Close to My Heart.

Supplies used:
Platinum Planet Ink pad (Tsukineko Brilliance Dew Drop Collection)
Lovely Impressions Embossing Folder - Rose Hearts
Ranger liquid pearls - Platinum
Spellbinders Scalloped Rectangle Dies
Stamp your cake layers and bells with your Platinum Ink, and trim around the images.

I cut out the scallops using my scalloped rectangle dies and trimmed them to size.  This can be accomplished in other ways if you have a different tool.  I would also suggest lace, I didn't have any on hand.

Emboss the white layer with your embossing folder and lightly add ink to raised images with the platinum ink.  Just a very little, it makes the pattern pop.

Cut your roses at about 1.6" to achieve this size flower.  I used a rolled flower image available on Close to My Heart Art Philosophy Cartridge
#M47643
For the flourishes, I actually cut a large flourish into different sizes and used pieces.  This is a good way to use those large flourishes.  Attach the top of the cake with foam tape for dimension.

This card measures 4.25 x 5.5", and as you can see the cake takes up the whole card.  If you are going to add a sentiment I suggest using a larger card base.

Pretty Floral Birthday Card

Here is another card using a border image.  This time I got a little fancier, but I think it really came out great.

Here is the border image I used.  I just placed flowers in the spots showing flowers and it added great dimension.
Storybook #M32E4D

The butterflies are from the Picturesque cartridge imageButterfly  #M3F6B3, I only cut a solid layer and of course the top layer.  I lightly inked them for a little color.

The oval label is from Elegant Edges cartridge.

The plum layer was embossed using the CTMH embossing folder, Quatrefoil.  The sentiment is CTMH Stamp Wish #M1051.

The colors I used are Smoky Plum, Olive and Pixie.

Try creating some cards using your border images, and please share them with me.

15 minute Sympathy Card with your Cricut Explore

Hi everyone,

This is truly a card we hope to never have to make.  When someone loses a loved one, it is hard to convey how truly sorry we are for their loss.

I recently had the unfortunate need to make a card for someone.  I think sympathy cards should be simple and elegant.  I saw a few cards on Pinterest that fit that bill, but most of them were created using dies and border punches I didn't own.

With the Cricut Explore and a little effort, you can make very similar cuts. Of course, now that I have my Cricut Explore I am no longer intimidated by more difficult cuts.

So I started looking through my borders an came up with this card.

I have a basic card file saved that I always open for a quick card.  My base is 8.5x5.5 which makes a 4.25x5.5 card.  This fits an A2 envelope, these can be purchased in bulk at your local craft store or Walmart.

I have the different layers ready to go also.  Just cut them and emboss if necessary.

For this card I found a border image I liked, #M3CA56 from Paper Lace 2 top layer only cut at 5.25" wide. A layered scallop oval, cut at 2.75", 2.5" and 2.25", and a few simple daisy flowers cut a little less than an inch.   I cut these out, added my sentiment, tied a little ribbon,  and added gems for flower centers.

That is it, done in under 15 minutes, that is if you don't spend days looking through all the images.  My suggestion, create that basic card file, add a few borders and labels you like.  When you need a card in a jiffy, open your file and cut the images you want.  Quick, simple, and done.

That's it, easy peasy.

Supplies used:
1/4" Grosgrain ribbon in white
Yellow gems
Sympathy stamp ( I used a combination of stamps I had)

How to Construct a Belly Box

Did you purchase a belly box from your favorite SVG seller and sitting there wondering how to put it together?  If you are like me, I need a little picture to help me visualize the process.  Here are a few pictures that can give you a little visual.  There are tons of videos I'm sure that walk you through the complete process, but if you are in a hurry and just need a picture, then here it is.

The belly box in the pictures below are from MyScrapChick.com, the file is Trio of Bunnies .  Be sure to register with their site, they run sales all the time, plus will send a Freebie Friday file each week.

After making a few here are a few tips to make it easier.

First tip:  Do all your shading and piecing before you construct the box.

Second tip:  Add your little extras, like eye lashes, mouth, etc.

It isn't totally necessary, but sure makes it a lot easier.  I ran my pieces through my Xyron, I wanted to make sure the stayed put.

Third tip:  Be sure to make all the folds before you start putting it together.  If you have put boxes together before than this is something you have a habit of doing.  Novices may not realize this is an important step.

The pictures below show how all the pieces are folded.

Fourth tip:  The body piece should be applied to the inside of the bottom piece.  You will get a more finished look.  Be sure you get it centered right or it may be a little difficult to fold up the sides.

Attach your box flaps inside the body and feet. as shown in this picture.  I used my ATG tape runner, but glue would be fine, I just don't have a lot of luck with glue staying.

Here they are, all completed.  Aren't they adorable?  They really aren't  difficult at all.  The hardest and most time consuming  part was the shading of all the pieces.  Shading isn't necessary, but it sure makes a difference in the final project.

I hope this quick tutorial helps.

Design Space 2.0, Slicing and Welding To make custom cards

Hi everyone,

If you were wondering how to slice and weld to make a custom card, here are a few snapshots of the Design Space screen to help you.  I know some folks would prefer pictures and can't always watch lengthy videos.  I personally have a limited data plan, so I only watch videos when I can't find picture or written instructions to help me.

I am using this card to provide instructions.

These pictures provide only a brief overview of the steps.  If you are a newbie and need really detailed instructions, I would suggest the videos for slicing and welding by Cricut or do a search, there are tons of them out there.

First you need to find that image you want on your card, I used Belle's dress, from Disney's Dreams Come True Cartridge.

Second, you will need a the shape of the finished card, I used square image.  Be sure to make duplicates of your images, and save your work as you go,  The duplicates will allow you to start over if the result wasn't exactly how you envisioned it.  It took me a few tries before I was happy with the end result.

Now ungroup you images and delete any pieces you won't be needing or hide them, your choice.

Sorry that the pictures are hard to see, but as you can see, I placed the square over the bodice of the dress and selected both images that I wanted to slice.  Slice will not work on grouped images, so be sure you ungroup your image.

Here is a link to slicing in Design Space.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsGZ4DnRq6E

As you can see, the bodice is now sliced off.  You can delete the pieces you don't need.

Now you will need to slice one side off of the dress.  Following the same steps as above with a larger square, slice the side of the dress.  Make a duplicate of the sliced dress.

Once you are satisfied with the image create a rectangle and place it overlapping the sliced dress.

Unlock the sizing lock in the bottom left hand corner,  this allows you to size in both directions separately.  I recommend placing your score line in the center so you get an idea where the fold will be.

Make sure the rectangle isn't showing behind the bodice of the dress.  Once everything looks good, select both images and weld them together.  Now you can attach your score line to the card.

Here is a video for welding.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qD00PnqXc8

Here is what the finished card looks like, as you can see I had to play with it until my size and score line were where I wanted them.

My finished card size is 8.5 x 5.5 inches, with the score line at 4.25".  I changed the color so you could see the score line.

If you would like to view the file here it is.  Keep in mind you will need to own the Disney cartridge, or purchase the image to cut it.

I hope these instructions helped.

Cricut Explore/Design Space System Minimum Requirements

Before you spend all that money, make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements.

You also want to be sure your Internet speed will handle Design Space.  There are some folks that don't have speeds fast enough to work seamlessly with Design Space.

They recommend high speed broadband.  I have an AT&T mobile HotSpot using LTE service and haven't had any issues using Design Space. That is so far I haven't had annoy issues, if that changes they will be hearing from me.  I do notice that when I watch videos my response time is slightly slower than some others, but I am willing to live with that to be able to use this amazing machine.

Recommended minimum system requirements
